We are pleased to announce that the beneficiary for Dougie's Grant 2024 is
Grow Limited .
Grow used the 2024 grant to fund the construction of flood benches in our greenhouse. We asked B W Builders, Gareth Billien, who had been our contractor for the redevelopment of our facilities, to construct the benches.
The flood benches are now in full use and are helping us maintain our plants in excellent condition. Unlike overhead watering, the system delivers water from below, ensuring that plants in bloom are not damaged and helping to reduce algae growth. Channels in the base of the benches allow water to distribute evenly and drain rapidly when the supply is switched off. The system is particularly valuable during periods of extreme heat, when efficient and effective watering is essential.
Michelle Knowles chose Grow as the 2024 beneficiary because of the close affinity between her father’s life and values and Grow’s horticultural work. When the grant was awarded, she said that her father “would be so delighted that the money is to be used for flood benches. He was a grower all his life and he would completely understand the need for them.”
Having visited Grow and seen our facilities and the work taking place across the site, Michelle was also impressed by the ethos behind the organisation, commenting: “The whole ethos of Grow is so uplifting.”
We are extremely grateful to Michelle and to Dougie’s Grant for helping us to improve our greenhouse facilities. The flood benches are not only a practical investment in the quality of the plants we grow, but also support the horticultural training and work experience we provide for adults with learning disabilities and difficulties.
The grant is a fitting tribute to Douglas Le Huquet’s lifelong passion for growing and his wish to create a lasting benefit for local causes.
